Grk 332U Gods and Mortals: Harnessing the Divine

A survey of how the ancient Greeks sought to procure divine aid for communal or private benefit through rituals and practices, such as prayers, sacrifices, mystery cults, and curse tablets, and the influence on later Roman religion. A full spectrum of practices will be considered, as revealed in literary, inscriptional, artistic, and archaeological evidence. Conducted in English.
