Grk 335U Tragedy, Fate, and Fragility

A study of Greek tragedy and the underlying worldview of vulnerability, loss, and fraught choices often made under the yoke of necessity, primarily through the works of Sophocles and Euripides. Course will consider how the Greeks (and later Romans) articulated the fragility of human happiness, and the various strategies devised to cope with this seemingly unavoidable aspect of human existence.
