Mus 111 Music Theory I

Vocabulary and notation for basic musical elements and common structures, including pitch, rhythm, meter, keys, chords, and intervals. Introduction to functional harmonic syntax, realizing chord progressions, and basic analysis. Familiarity with music notation is necessary and assessed via placement test. Simultaneous enrollment in MUS 114 and MUS 191 is recommended for most music majors and minors. This is the first course in a sequence of three: Mus 111, Mus 112, and Mus 113.
