Soc 448 Sociology of Education
Develops a sociological understanding of education in the United States. Examines the role of schooling in the larger society; social structure of schools; processes of social mobility, stratification and social reproduction; dynamics of race, class, and gender inequalities in education; student-teacher relationships; and outcomes of education. Integrates classic and contemporary works from scholarly literature and other materials, with the goal of increasing students’ understanding of sociological perspectives of education, ability to apply sociological concepts/theories to everyday life, and critical thinking and writing skills.

Upper-division standing.
