Soc 370 Sociology of Deviancy

Introduction to, and analysis of, the social construction of deviance, including the socially constructed norms, values, and beliefs of U.S. society. Considers various definitions of deviance, and how power, including informal and formal social control, affects these definitions. Studies social responses to those defined as “deviant” and the consequences of these labels, both on those who are labeled and on society.
