ArH 311U History of Asian Art

A survey of art and architecture of Asia from prehistoric times to the 19th century. The art and architecture (including ceramics, sculpture, painting, textiles, and other utilitarian implements-- e.g., ritual bronze vessels of China) of Asia will be presented in context of chronology, source (indigenous or foreign influence), site and in relation to the forces of each society's culture, religion, politics, geography, and history. Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism, Shintoism, Taoism, Shamanism, symbolism, and mythology are basic to the arts of Asia. ArH 311U: South Asia (India) and Southeast Asia (Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Thailand, Burma, and Indonesia). ArH 312U: China and Korea. ArH 313U: Japan. This is the first course in a sequence of three: ArH 311U, ArH 312U, and ArH 313U.
