USP 325 Community and the Built Environment

This course examines the relationships between urban form and social patterns, and efforts by urban designers to influence community life by shaping the built environment. The history of ideas about urban form and community development, and the history of proposed and implemented projects will be surveyed, and their relevance for contemporary urban planning and design practices will be assessed. Iniatives in the Portland metropolitan area to enhance community livability will be studied.
