G 539 Powder X-ray Diffraction

Identifies and quantifies minerals using powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), includes the nature and production of X-rays, basic X-ray crystallography, the principles and applications of X-ray diffraction, as well as certification for use of the X-ray diffractometer. Also includes an independent project to identify or quantify unknown minerals using the XRD. Also offered for undergraduate-level credit as G 439 and may be taken only once for credit.
