Anth 490 The Anthropology of Violence

Theoretical and ethnographic exploration of the nature of violence. Topics include identity politics and nationalism; the biology of aggression and the cultural meanings of pain; state violence; symbolic and structural violence; and human rights. Also offered for graduate-level credit as Anth 590 and may be taken only once for credit. Expected preparation: 8 credits in socio-cultural anthropology (Anth 304, Anth 305 strongly recommended).
