Functional and empirical definitions of money and interest rates. Characteristics and role of bank and non-bank financial institutions in determining the level of money and interest rates. History of the Federal Reserve System. Instruments of monetary control by the Federal Reserve. Alternative models of monetary influence on the economy. Also offered for undergraduate-level credit as Ec 420 and may be taken only once for credit.
