Art 373 Intermediate Sculpture I: Contemporary Approaches

The first of a two-term sequence that focuses on contemporary sculptural practices. Through assignments that emphasize conceptual development and critical thinking, students are introduced to topics such as appropriation, time-based art, kinetics, interactivity, collaboration, and performance. The expanded field of sculpture is explored as potential materials extend into light, sound, motion, and the environment. Students begin to develop their own personal voice while developing the vocabulary by which to discuss ones own work and others. Students will work in a variety of media while continuing to utilize and build upon the technical and conceptual knowledge they acquired in lower-division sculpture courses.
