Federal Work-Study
The Federal Work-Study Program is a limited, need-based program available to eligible undergraduate and graduate students that meet the awarding criteria established by the PSU Office of Student Financial Aid. Employment opportunities are on-campus and off-campus. On-campus jobs are available with nearly every academic and administrative department. Off-campus jobs are available with government agencies and nonprofit groups; many are community service jobs that involve directly serving the community while providing a good work experience. The Portland State University Career Center lists openings for on-campus and off-campus jobs at www.pdx.edu/careers. More information can be found at www.pdx.edu/student-finance.
Federal Work-Study awards are based on financial need; however, students are not guaranteed to earn the full awarded amount. Additionally, students are not automatically placed in jobs. It is the student’s responsibility to search for positions, apply, interview, and maintain employment. Wages are paid through a monthly student payroll, and students are responsible for using their earnings toward educational expenses. Federal Work Study positions are typically available during the academic year, and students may work up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session, with increased hours allowed during academic breaks.
Community Service Work-Study (CSWS)
Students with Federal Work-Study eligibility may have the opportunity to work off-campus with approved nonprofit organizations or government agencies through Community Service Work-Study. These positions must benefit the broader community and require an established agreement between the university and the employer. CSWS positions are typically available during the academic year, and students may work up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session, with increased hours allowed during academic breaks.
Students interested in CSWS positions should confirm their Federal Work-Study eligibility and consult PSU’s student employment resources for available opportunities.
Reading and Math Tutors
Federal Work-Study students may also work as reading or math tutors in local schools. These roles are generally available during the academic year and offer a meaningful way to support K–12 students in the community. Students in these positions may work up to 20 hours per week while classes are in session.
