Coun 531 Foundations of Substance Abuse Counseling

Provides an overview of the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual dimensions of addictions and addictive behavior. Addictive behaviors are presented as part of a continuum of mental and emotional disorders. Emphasizes the biological substrate and development course of addictions and the relationship of addictive behavior to common psychological disorders. Models and theories of addictive behavior that the professional counselor needs to understand when treating clients with addictive and concurring disorders are reviewed. Also offered for undergraduate-level credit as Coun 431 and may be taken only once for credit.
