JSt 319U Rabbinic Culture in the Roman World
Introduction to history and literature of the rabbinic movement in Roman Palestine, 70 CE-500 CE. Origins of the rabbis, their role in society, genres of rabbinic literature (Mishnah, Talmud, Midrash), rabbinic law and theology and rabbinic attitudes towards the urban culture of the Roman Near East. This is the same course as Hst 319U
and may be taken only once for credit.
