Jpn 424 Contemporary Japanese Poetry and Pop Culture

An introduction to contemporary Japanese pop culture including free verse, traditional tanka, song lyrics, and comic books (manga). Students read verse in Japanese, analyze syntax, learn genre requirements, and understand the history of modern Japanese poetry and songs; students analyze sequential-art narratives to understand multiple aspects of Japanese pop culture. Also offered for graduate-level credit as Jpn 524 and may be taken only once for credit.
